Hi I’m Kiersten
From my studio in upstate New York, I paint abstracts and landscapes layered with discarded textile. My artwork often threads the line between painting and fiber art. At the core, my work is about soulful storytelling, the comforts of home and our connection to nature. In my art you can spot influences of folk art, handcraft and a pull toward rural charm. I reuse textiles collected from my full-time career as a clothing designer. Layering in fabric brings an unexpectedness and an unapologetically tattered, lived-in feel to my work
While painting my abstracts, I’m often thinking of the ways we bring warmth into our homes and adorning it with our individual quirks and personalities. Looking at one of my paintings brings to mind a home filled with cherished keepsakes, heirlooms and handmade treasures. I’m endlessly inspired by all things hand crafted, because they are a testament to human imperfection, tradition and community.
The subject of my landscapes and representational scenes are often inspired by upstate mountain living and the sweetness of living life slowly . My aim is to capture that romanticized modern rural lifestyle, whether its a story created or real experience. Painting the mountains, lakes and forests here brings me both great comfort and a wonder of our mysterious natural world. I find nature is the catalyst to true connection, inviting you to look inward or encouraging the most meaningful moments with loved ones.
I build up my work in layers of acrylic paint, collage and discarded scraps of textile, often going back and forth between paint and fabric scraps cut or ripped in haphazard shapes. The defining characteristics of my art include an undone, loose and layered style with unexpected color combinations and intriguing compositions. I like to keep my brushstrokes quick and imperfect, sometimes following a representational element and sometimes not. Sometimes, I might finish a piece with a bit of thread work, running a stitch directly on the artwork with my sewing machine or embroidered with needle and thread. In working this way, I hope to create art that is unpretentious, almost naive and unexpected, yet always bringing the viewer a curiosity to look closer and a evoking a sense of nostalgia - a real lovecraft celebrating the human experience and the natural world we live in.
